Class 3 automotive mechanic exam study tips

Passing Class 3 does not mean memorising the whole textbook. You need to understand the principles, read Japanese items in time and avoid losing points by misreading the question. These are the methods that work for many learners.

1. One subject first

Chassis, gasoline and diesel are separate tests. Choose the one closest to your work and focus on it until you pass. The shared parts (measuring tools, materials, the law, basic electrics) carry over to the next subject.

2. Study by chapter, not by paper

The Class 3 textbooks are organised by system: for the engine, the block, valves, lubrication, cooling, fuel and ignition. Study one system per day, answer items on that system, and only then sit full 30-item papers. That keeps your knowledge connected.

3. Practise reading without furigana

The real test has no furigana. Keep it on in the first week to learn readings. From the second week turn it off and switch it on only when you really cannot read a word, then write that word down. See car mechanic vocabulary.

4. Read the question first, then the options

Ask yourself: does it want the 適切てきせつ (correct) or the 不適切ふてきせつ (incorrect) option? Which part is it about? Then judge each option true or false. This is faster than skimming all four and guessing. Details in answering four-choice items.

5. Do not skip calculations

Each paper usually has a few calculations: displacement, compression ratio, gear ratio, Ohm's law. There are few formulas and a little practice makes them easy points. See Class 3 calculations.

6. Sit full 60-minute papers

At least three or four times before the test, sit a 30-item paper in exactly 60 minutes without looking anything up. You will learn how fast you read and how many minutes to keep for checking.

7. Review missed items until you get them right

Missed items are your best study material. Redo them after one day and again after a week. If you still miss one, reread the matching textbook chapter. The app collects missed items for you.

8. Use JASPA's past papers

JASPA publishes previous papers and answers. Sit a few in the last week to get used to the real wording. The app's papers are practice items written by ViMai to help you understand the material before you try them.

VIP unlocks papers 4 to 20 in all three subjects (51 papers), the per-item tips and the detailed explanations for missed items. VIP is bought inside the iOS app with Apple payment, and Apple shows the price. The App Store version is coming soon. You can try the free exams on the web now.

FAQ

How long should I study?

It depends on your experience and Japanese. Someone who works in a garage and reads basic Japanese often needs about one to two months per subject with daily study.

Textbook or practice papers?

Both. Read the textbook chapter by chapter to understand it, then use papers to check yourself. When you miss an item, go back to that chapter.

Should I memorise the answers?

No. The real test changes the wording. Understand why the right answer is right and why the other three are wrong, as the app's explanations show.

Take a 30-item mock paper and see right away which items you missed and why.
